I truly enjoy most of PG's novels, but take them with a grain of salt. I always read a reliable source (such as Alison Weir) if I really want to read what is actually known about a given monarch. PG does so well bringing facts alive, but takes liberties everywhere. Regarding this novel: it is the same material, repeated (using some of the same words and phrases), over and over and over again. Some reviewers have mentioned this, but truly, it would be laughable if it weren't so frustrating. MQS is a fascinating woman; so much more could have been done with her character. Additionally, Bess is the reason I gave this book two stars rather than one--she's intriguing. Unfortunately, the fascination ends after the 4th and 5th repetitions of the same exact thoughts and actions. Margaret George wrote 870 pages about MQS, and I found the novel compelling. PG phoned in this one.*Full disclosure: I could not go past the halfway point.*1 of 1 people found the following review helpful.Mary, Queen of ScotsBy Maxine A. HartleyThe other queen is Mary, Queen of Scots. The timeline for this novel of intrigue by Philippa Gregory is from 1568 to 1587, the years that Mary was held in England, and finally beheaded. Her sojourn begins as a courtesy given by Queen Elizabeth First. Mary is given sanctuary in England from Scotland, where she has been defeated by the Protestant Lords, who include John Knox. They are adamant that a Roman Catholic monarch will not sit upon the throne.Mary was raised in France. From childhood, she was betrothed to the prince of France, son of the reigning king, Henry II. She is spoiled and petted, and becomes a breathtakingly beautiful young queen married to the Dauphin. In the first year of their marriage, he dies of wounds inflicted in a jousting tournament. She goes back to Scotland and inhabits the throne, where she comes into conflict with the Protestant Lords and her half-brother, a rival for the throne.Elizabeth offers her sanctuary. Mary becomes the house guest of the Earl and Duchess of Shrewsbury, Lord George Talbot and his wife, Bess of Hardwick. Her stay is to be temporary, until the English can put her back on the Scottish throne, but so much intrigue occurs that the confinement stretches into 16 years.Gregory narrates events through the perceptions of three main players: the Earl of Shrewsbury, his wife, Bess, and Mary, Queen of Scots. Through their thoughts and personal adventures we learn of all the intrigues of the time, which are legion.Queen Mary cannot stop plotting. As a result, she is moved from one castle to another, usually from a bright, airy one to Tutbury, which is as dark and foreboding a place as a prison. It is not good enough for her that she will be returned to her throne in Scotland. She has to plot with high-ranking officials for the overthrow of Elizabeth, even managing to enlist the help of the French and the Spanish. Their dream and hers is that she become Catholic queen of France, England and Scotland. That plan is squelched and as a result, the Earl of Northumberland is beheaded. Her plots even involved an uprising of the people in the north of England, who yearn for the return of Catholicism. That plot fails when Philip of Spain breaks his promise to send the Spanish Armada to help them. One plot leads to another to overthrow Queen Elizabeth, which leads to Mary's long imprisonment and eventual beheading. The plots are all uncovered by Elizabeth's trusted advisor, William Cecil, who has such a well-coordinated network, that he has spies spying on spies. In the subplot we learn all about the Earl of Shrewsbury, Queen Mary's guardian, an honourable man who is true to Elizabeth his sovereign, but who nonetheless becomes totally besotted with the beautiful, wily and youthful Queen Mary. He becomes her gallant, which creates a severe rift with his wife, Bess.Bess's story in itself is intriguing. She is truly a self-made woman, extremely unusual for those times when women of the aristocracy were owned by their men and told so in no uncertain terms.Bess was born to a widow who was left nothing but debt by her late husband.. She realizes that a woman is judged by her husband and sets out to be well-judged and well-placed in the world of men. Bess is married four times, carefully choosing rich, old men who would leave her everything. A problem was that a woman could own nothing. If she had anything, it passed to her husband upon marriage..Each marriage increased Bess's wealth in land and castles. She managed to get one husband to leave everything to her outright so that when she married Shrewsbury to become a duchess, she was rich in land and homes. She has reached the pinnacle of her success and vowed never, ever to be poor again. Bess kept accounts books - a different book for each estate. She knew expenses and profits to the penny. Not so her husband, the Earl, who was born to wealth, took it for granted, didn't know how it was managed and didn't care. When they were chosen by Elizabeth to play hosts to Queen Mary, Bess considered this to be a great honour. But in the first two years, they were bankrupt, since Elizabeth never paid for Mary's keep as she was supposed to do, and Mary insisted in living like a full queen with her court around her and precious gowns and thirty-course meals. Then Mary got caught trying to escape, even after the Duke of Norfolk, Thomas Howard, was beheaded for his role in the greatest of the plots. It was then that her long imprisonment began, which culminated in her beheading. Elizabeth's grand steward, George Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury, had to oversee the beheading, and history documents his weeping as her head rolled away from her body.Bess recovers part of her fortune and to find out how, give this book of intrigue a read. Guaranteed: that you will not read a better book of murder and mayhem in all your mystery library than this historical account of the murder and mayhem of the Tudor times.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.WonderfulBy Britt R.This book took me a little longer than usual to read, not because of the quality of the writing, but because this was a part of Tudor history I didn't know much about and I found myself constantly looking up the characters and places Gregory mentioned in the book.I think writing this book from 3 different first person perspectives gave an interesting view of the time period. Three different people have three very different views of the same event. I found myself constantly thrown for a loop by Mary. She never thought twice about lying and it was interesting to see how she would portray an event to others, and then how she actually thought of the same event.Bess is one of the best historical fiction characters I've read in a long time. From Gregory's book, as well as the researching I did on my own, I've come to really love her strength and determination. She was a smart business woman and used that to her advantage. She worked her way up and earned the things she had, even if it was through marriage, and worked hard to keep herself safe and secure for the future. I think more women in books should be like her.Yet again, Gregory has me thinking about the little things in history and how one simple decision can change the fate of a country, and the world. While not my favorite book (The Queen's Fool has that title), it was a great read and sheds more light onto the Tudor era of history.See all 363 customer reviews...
