VanekIt was recommended to me by a therapist friend . delivered it quickly. Firrst first day I read through it2 briefly, and looked over the photos and graphs. Then I started to do just 2 exercises - slowly, with full focus all the way through. I did just 3 repetitions, as that helped me to stay in good alignment, and BREATHE through the entire 3 repetitions. I did it a couple more times that day.Next day various small areas of my leg were feeling slightly achy (after just 3 reps ! that much out of shape they were), but my entire leg was feeling more alive. So doing just 3 repetitions, slowly and mindfully I added 2 more of the exercises. Then in a pool I did 2 of the easy exercises I remembered. Next time I added 2 more. I am making a steady progress, without feeling I might injure something. The book is awesome in the "laying out simple self-tests". Hard to find anywhere else. Just one of the simple tests activated muscles that I was afraid to fully engage for 8 month..So that alone was worth the purchase price of this excellent book. Thank you to both of the authors, and for carrying it.6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. This is the best bang for the buckBy Plinio NetoI decided to update my comments because I can't express enough how grateful I am for this book. My knees have been bothering me for the past couple of years. I am a light person and on my early 50s. I could not understand why my knees were bothering me so much. I went to a doctor, took X-rays and the doctors says everything is good. Asked me to take some maloxcom (I don't like to take any kind of medication) but it was bothering me so much that I decided to take it. It didn't help. I went to see a physical therapist but I realized I knew way more than him (plus it was expensive sessions) and any weight I would put on the knee it would inflame it.The interesting thing is that there was no pain while working out (e.g. quads and leg press with very light weight). But the next day, it would bother me a lot... So, I was going crazy with it and decided to start buying books. I probably bought 3-4 books just about knees. I finally ran into this book. I start doing the recommended water exercise on a daily basis. This worked like a miracle. The key was to re-build the quads muscle without causing irritation/inflammation. Also, working out in the water stimulated the knee circulation enhancing the healing process.I wish this was the first book I had ran into. I strongly recommend.52 of 54 people found the following review helpful. Here's one surgeon who DOESN'T want to do surgery-unless he has toBy Jini CiceroDr. Klapper is renowned in my neck of the woods. Whenever I hear about a surgeon that does everything in his power to keep you OVER the knife-I'm impressed; and then I ask if that doctor is Dr. Klapper. I'm a fitness coach and I bought this book after one of my clients had told me she had recently seen the doctor concerning a life-long knee problem. I was hesitant to read the book the client got while at Dr. Klapper's office because she had already mentioned that he'd recommended no weight bearing exercise on her knees...at all. Many of us in the fitness industry have grown so tired of doctors treating patients like invalids who then naturally, take their doctor's advice to heart (as they should!) but when the advice is typically so extreme that the patient doesn't want to do ANYTHING in fear of going against the "doctor's orders," well that just leads to...one MORE reason not to exercise. You can imagine how working around THAT makes my job next to impossible. Not to mention that to even SUGGEST a client go against his doctor's advice can land me in a heap 'o trouble; so I defer to the doctor. But I just don't want to see clients with healthy or "healed" hips and knees wind up dying prematurely of heart disease attributable to physical inactivity.Dr. Klapper, thankfully, understands the importance of staying physically active and had the foresight to bring along the expertise of Lynda Huey as a co-author-she knows her stuff and keeps patients active and mobile by having them train in the pool. (Hey, if pool workouts are challenging enough for Olympic track and field stars, they're good enough for me.) The pool exercises in the book are easy enough to learn, and if practiced diligently, along with their "land" exercises, patients can be given options instead of assuming (or being told), that they just can't exercise anymore or they will cause further damage to their knees and then surgery will be the ONLY option. This book demonstrates how to do the best with the use you still have in your knees and then begin the process of training the body to work with these joints in a pain-free way. With what we now know about the pounding and the beating our joints take over the course of the average lifetime (with those of us who are physically active), or, what happens to our joints when we are physically IN-active, we can be better prepared to appropriately work the effected musculature or better yet, work the body holistically in preparation for a life time of physical activity instead of spending our time repairing/rehabbing after its abuse. If we learn better, more effective ways to protect the joints during exercise then surprise...we can even better our sports performance.See all 94 customer reviews...
