At installment 5, one would expect the series to begin to get habitual and decay. At first it seems like this is indeed happening, and the crew gets stupid and overconfident (a little side episode seems only for the purpose of illustrating that, so I guess it is deliberate).On the plus side, two of the characters receive upgrades that change their capabilities. While a dangerous tactic for an author (ever increasing technology or magic leads to boring magic vs. magic plots) the author does not fall quite into that trap, and explores the legitimate psychological and physical effects of genetic upgrades. Some of this begins to emphasize the differences in species, which reviewers had complained about in previous installments. The author even postulates evolutionary justification for why on the surface interactions, so many species are similar. One may agree or disagree, but the author's position is apparently not just accidental. Perhaps he based it on his personal experiences interacting with other cultures He doesn't get quite that introspective. But this installment is relatively more introspective than the others.Then there is a prison break which they undertake without full control, and a dull sequence of them plowing through tunnels and cutting open grates in what amounts to a dungeon. I was bored and started skimming. But then, issues of control are plainly a theme of this novel. I don't want to spoil it. But it is not just a formula extension of what went previously.One of the things I like about the beginning of a series is how future team members find each other and come together for a common purpose. Most series go bad because this interesting process stops. The author gets comfortable with the team. Or makes arbitrary changes, like death, that do not come from within the team. Not so Mr. Dalzelle. This 5th book is really about changes in the team, and temporary re-teaming, and trust, and long term development. If you like team formation, just read it. I witheld one star only because of the tunnel sequence. Otherwise, the book is really great and much deeper than the usual in this genre. There are even developments in the, er, ah, the other side of Jason's life. And not the usual J.T.Kirk-like swaggering notches either.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Crusher Ain't All Brute!By GuardsixThis is a very entertaining series. I needed something like this after reading some pretty bloody and gory books lately. They were more like science fiction horror than anything else. This book and those in this series are definitely military science fiction and a joy to read. There’s some fighting in space and on the ground, but only when necessary. The Omega Force, which is not necessarily a military outfit, is a collection of like-minded aliens who have set out to help the common being when needed. They try to right some wrongs being forced on people who can’t fight back. These guys are not white knights coming to the rescue, but they will get in and get dirty when needed. They also expect to make money doing what they do and if not from those they help, then from their benefactor, Crisstof Dalton, a very wealthy individual who believes in their cause.This time they have found out something pretty special about one of the Omega Force. Crusher, a Galvetic Warrior, is a huge alien that has the strength of several men. He stands taller than most men and has a fearsome disposition when riled. Now, he’s also know a Lord Felex Tezakar, the Guardian Archon of Galvetor, although none of the other Omega Force members knew of this until they met with three others of Crusher’s kind who were looking for him. They need the Lord Archon to return to Galvetor to hold off an internal civil war between the warrior class and the others of the gelten race. Still, Crusher or Lord Tezakar, was banished from Galvetor, and told never to return under penalty of death. So, it doesn’t look like he’s going back anytime soon, or does itThis story has some political intrigue which, fortunately, isn’t really all that detailed or dwelled on. The warrior class feels they’ve been deemed second class citizens and ostricized to their own planet, Restaria, which is almost an exact duplicate of Galvetor. It was felt that the normal non-warrior class of geltens would feel safer if their warriors were off-planet instead of causing problems on the homeworld. Anyway, Crusher’s new found background could mean the end of his membership in Omega Force. If he returns to where he was born and raised and to the position for which he was groomed all his life, that will leave the Omega Team without a significant hole in their ranks, or will itThe story is written really well. I like they way the characters have been created and while we don’t know everything about each one, we’re learning more and more during each book. The team finds itself severely challenged when two of it’s lesser capable members are captured by unknown aliens and subjected to some unreasonable torture. One is near death and the other is likely to follow if they are not found and rescued. The only problem is that the Phoenix, the Omega Force’s ship, was also captured. Several things going on in this book and they are all not all brought to a complete conclusion.I’ve already bought the next book, “Omega Force: Secret of the Phoenix (Omega Force, Book Six)” and I know there is already a seventh and eighth book out there. Such great reading, it is hard not to buy all of them at once.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Another Brilliant Omega Force Episode providing background on CrusherBy Jas POmega Force is back in their 5th instalment, but this time it is Crusher that is in the limelight. Whilst waiting having a drink after a job, the crew are approached by the ‘Caretaker’ from Galvetor who recognises Crusher as the missing Archon of Galvetor. Crusher is actually Lord Felix Tezakar, the Archon and was banished from Galvetor previously.Now he is needed desperately back on the planet as Civil War is about to break out.So as usual, the crew decide to leap right in, and rush to the aid of the dual planetary system. This is as far as I go, the rest I will remain spoiler free (and there are no real spoilers in what you have just read)As with all the other stories, this one has its moments of hilarious laughter were you will be chuckling into the pages and hope no one notices. There are the usual brilliant battle scenes, as well as the exceptionally designed and very creative tech that we all love in this series.All the main characters as well as the usual sub-characters are in the story. There is a bit of twist, and this is the only spoiler point I will bend a bit, whilst all the characters are in the story, this one is worth reading to see if they all make it out at the end. There are some brutal fight scenes, and considering that a lot of the fighting takes place on a planet filled with Galvetic WarriorsThe other really fascinating thing about this particular book is all the background about Crusher. Being that he is easily one of the favourites of the series, there is an abundant amount of information not only about Crusher and his past, but also about the Galvetic race and the twin planets that they come from.Once again, Dalzelle has delivered a riveting and engaging book that will capture the interest of fans on multiple levels.Dalzelle is an exceptional writer, and anyone interested in Sci-Fi should seriously give this series a read.See all 348 customer reviews...
