The only criticism is that I wish the author had gone into more detail about how Unitarianism fits in the history of the predestination controversy.6 of 7 people found the following review helpful.A thoughtful book on the subject that you will actually finish--yes reallyBy Maxwell GrantThis is a book that delights and teaches on many levels.It is a masterpiece of thought and style, because it manages to parse a subject that is notoriously--and gloriously--technical within theology, and it lets you in on the debates almost at their most arcane, and yet you get it. Better yet, Thuesen keeps the subject grounded not in the technicalities themselves, but more deeply in why they mattered to the people spilling all that ink.If Malcolm Gladwell wrote about theology, it would be something like this.And Thuesen writes in a way that keeps you going. His voice comes through, and it's always thoughtful and yet without pedantry. But on top of that, there are organizational decisions he's made that are a triumph of reader-friendliness. There is a superb and thorough glossary of terms at the back--just when you were starting to lose track of the (crucial) difference between supra- and infra-lapsarianism, you don't need to go hunting. And he was wise about the length of his chapters, such that you don't mind doing "a little more" at one sitting than you might in a work that was planned less carefully.If you read like I do, keeping momentum is a very important factor in what you finish and what you end up selling at the church rummage sale. A book that you "enjoy" (note the quotation marks there) ends up further and further down the pile.This is one you will read.I would have enjoyed further detail about Thuesen's broad distinction between sacramentalism and doctrinalism as characteristic American responses to predestination. I thought sacramentalism could have had further treatment. I was also very intrigued by the seeming paradox that political freedom became an important commitment to denominations that were predestinarian almost to the point of determinism, where many more Arminian traditions ended up more reflexively loyal to the Crown, and to the status quo. Secretly, I am hoping that will be Thuesen's next book.This book is nothing short of a triumph. Really.
