The dog alone had a stand out presence. But is clean romance all there is to a Christian novel Really disappointing was the lack of anything inspiring or of take away value. I expected more. The main character is Annie and her list to improve her life contains the following: new exciting job, great hair, a convertible, and a boyfriend. The men she dates are not qualified to be Christian, infact there's no mention of it at all.Here are the few "pats on the back" to Christianity the author gave this novel: When Annie is considering a job, her best friend tells her to think about it, MAYBE pray about it. A Jeremy Camp concert is mentioned in passing. At the hospital over the bedside of a sick friend, someone suggests praying for the patient. Annie is "only slightly reluctant" but prays silently. There is never an explanation about why she is reluctant. There are also two verses tossed in just to verify this is a Christian book we are reading. No mention of attending church. A Bible sits by Annie's bedside, but only because her Gram put there. Does Annie even own oneThis being the fourth book in the Love Finds You series I have read, I can say this. Do not expect much in the Christianity department. God seems more a side player, if mentioned at all. Annie draws up a list of things she feels she needs to 'star in [her] own life story.' Sandra Bricker's 'Love Finds You in Carmel-by-the-Sea' details Annie's charmingly bumpy path to creating-and embracing-her new life and love.Annie finds roadblocks and complications as she works down her list: none of her friends thinks her 'cool' new job as an assistant detective is right for her; her stylist won't straighten her unruly curls; she cannot afford a great new apartment or a sporty new car; and as for revamping her love life, her friend's set-up is a loutish lothario. And then there's that insufferably arrogant-but intriguing-police detective she keeps running into...Bricker's light humor and deft characterization keep the overall tone sweet and breezy, while Annie's emotional growth is still realistic and relatable. Secondary characters have more depth than is usual for this sub genre. Annie's love life is amusing and romantic, with enough false steps and goofs to make her eventual 'happily-ever-after' satisfying.Bricker is less successful in integrating the Christian faith element into her story: the few references seem applied onto the characters rather than an integral part of their makeup. A major secondary plot element is left unresolved, and Annie's grandmother is absent from the last third of the story. Bricker's "The Big 5-Oh" is a stronger example of her ability to resolve interwoven subplots. Nevertheless, this is a light and amusing, feel-good story with a delightful heroine, a sparkling romance and an evocative setting full of appealing characters.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Another Fun Romantic story by my favorite authorBy J. WilliamsSandra Bricker always manages to capture not only a great story line with lots of subtle humor and very descriptive scenes and characters, she also makes you want to savor every page of her books. I always hate for the book to end, for I want to keep the characters as friends and see what happens next in their lives! This does not disappoint! I love how she brings brand names and public places we can all identify with into her books. There are always challenges, a bit of "will he or won't he" times but no cursing, no explicit sex, and always an ending filled with all the right stuff. It's good to read a book which ends with a happily ever after, even though you are kept in suspense as to which of several relationships will win out. You don't see the ending coming, because Sandie puts in a fun and unexpected twist. Makes you want to read other Love Finds You books because you enjoyed this one so much.See all 27 customer reviews...
